The cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover, is one of the most important agricultural insect pests. Pyrethroid and neonicotinoid insecticides have generally shown excellent control of A. gossypii, but many populations of this pest have developed resistance against these classes of insecticides. The success of insecticide resistance management strategies requires detailed knowledge of both phenotype and genotype of the target insect pest. In this study, we attempted to understand the molecular status of insecticide resistance in cotton aphid populations in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China, the major cotton planting region of China. In addition to the previously reported M918L mutation, we discovered another substitution (M918V) in the voltage-gated sodium channel (VGSC). Moreover, we developed a molecular assay that could be used to detect precisely the R81T mutation in the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR). This survey revealed that 918L was the predominant VGSC allele with a frequency ranging from 50.0% to 56.7%. Notably, appreciable frequencies (between 10% and 40%) of the resistance 81T allele of the nAChR gene were detected in three investigated populations. The prevalent co-occurrence of both VGSC 918L/V and nAchR 81T indicates a worrisome situation of multiple resistance to both pyrethroids and neonicotinoids. 相似文献

Abstract. Two laboratory studies were conducted to investigate effects of treatments for direct "current electrical penetration graph (DC-EPG) recordings or 'tether effect', on behaviour and reproductive performance of cowpea aphid Aphis craccivora Koch. The experiments constituted a control study in application of DC-EPGs to analyse cowpea aphid feeding behaviour and host plant resistance mechanisms. Resistant (ICV-12) and susceptible (ICV-1) cultivars of cowpea Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp were used. EPG treatments included two groups of aphids: tethered aphids that were exposed to DC electricity via an attachment of a thin, flexible gold wire on their dorsum using a droplet of adhesive silver paint, and 'free' (untethered) aphids with a dorsal spot of silver paint only. EPGs of the tethered aphids were recorded continuously for c. ! h, whereas from the 'free' aphids recordings were done only for brief periods of 2–5 min, by temporarily contacting a gold wire to the spot of silver paint. Waveform signals generated from resistance fluctuations and electromotive forces, and representing aphid stylet penetration behaviour were recorded. A separate experiment was conducted to investigate effects of EPG treatments on aphid survivorship and population growth. Overall, EPG treatments did not significantly affect aphid stylet penetration behaviour or life-table parameters. However, effects of crop cultivar on those characteristics were significant. Waveform E2, which denotes aphid ingestion in phloem sieve elements, and non-penetration behaviour were important indicators of aphid resistance in ICV-12. Also, apart from the number of aphid generations, other life-table parameters were useful indicators of ICV-12 resistance. 1. Interactions between aphids and ants are considered to be mutualistic, with both partners benefiting. Costs associated with such interactions are likely to be less obvious, although they can be expected, especially if these associations are facultative.
2. It is demonstrated here that there are costs in several life-history parameters to individual aphids resulting from ant attendance. Over several generations Aphis fabae cirsiiacanthoides feeding on Cirsium arvense , at a range of developmental stages, suffered significant costs when tended by Lasius niger , e.g. in terms of a prolonged developmental time, delayed offspring production, proportionally smaller gonads, fewer well developed embryos and a reduced mean relative growth rate. These effects are similar to those observed when aphids feed on poor quality plants.

Aphis gossypii Glover (Hom.: Aphididae) is a damaging pest of protected cucumbers in the UK, and control measures are required which are compatible with other components in the overall cucumber integrated pest management programme. Two methods of establishing the parasitoids, Aphidius colemani Viereck (Hym.: Braconidae), in cucumber crops prior to invasion of the aphids were developed. The first involved weekly releases of small numbers of parasitoids beginning before A. gossypii became established on the plants. The second method used open-rearing units based on maize, wheat and rygrass plants infested with Rhopalosiphum padi L (Hom.: Aphididae), which is a common host to many natural enemies of A. gossypii but not a threat to the cucumber crop. Both methods were found to be more efficient in summer than in late spring. Parasitoid release rates were established for the two control methods at both of these times of the year. Like all biological control measures, these methods will require careful management in practice and some fine-tuning to suit individual crop production systems. 相似文献
